Welcome to the George Washington Regional Commission (GWRC). The GWRC is the planning district commission for Virginia Planning District 16, which includes the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. The GWRC – along with its predecessor, the Rappahannock Area Development Commission – has served Planning District 16 for more than 40 years. Our principal functions are regional land-use planning, transportation planning and transportation demand-management activities, including the GWRideConnect program as well as the management and operation of three GoTelework.org telework centers. We also support a number of affiliated organizations, including the Rappahannock Economic Development Corporation, the Rappahannock River Basin Commission and the Rappahannock Disabilities Services Board.
Planning District 16 – with a population of more than 300,000 – is the fastest-growing region in Virginia and the fourth most populous of the Commonwealth’s 21 planning districts. The rich history, abundant natural beauty and vibrant economy of the region combine to make it an exciting place to live and do business.
All of us at the George Washington Regional Commission invite you to learn more about Planning District 16 by exploring this website and by visiting the beautiful communities and places that make this region the special place that it is!
