Program Information

GWRC has funding available to help residential properties repair, replace, or correct failing septic systems, pit privies, and straight pipes.

Where is assistance available?

    • Portions of Caroline County
    • Portions of Spotsylvania County

As of July 01, 2026, funding is only available for projects located in select areas of Caroline County and Spotsylvania County. If your project is within either of these localities, we encourage you to apply. Our staff will review each application and promptly notify applicants of funding eligibility and next steps.

 

What projects are eligible?

  • The septic system must be for a residential property
  • Eligible projects include repair, replacement, or correction of:
    • Failing Septic Systems
    • Straight Pipes
    • Pit Privies

 

What amount of cost-share assistance is available?

  • The GWRC may cover 50% to 80% of the cost of eligible repairs, replacements, or corrections through this program, depending on income level. All income levels may apply for assistance.

Funding Information

GWRC’s Septic Relief Program is made possible by our funders. This project is funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) under a § 319 grant agreement; by DEQ with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding through the Commonwealth of Virginia’s ARPA State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund implementation; and by Virginia Department of Health (VDH) with ARPA funding through the Septic and Well Assistance Program (SWAP).
